How To Make Puran Poli

Puran Poli is a traditional kind of Indian flatbread that is made during the Maharashtrian New year Gudi Padwa. It is also made during Holi when the fire is lit. Also called Obattu or Bobbattu in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh etc, Puran Poli is a classical Indian dish and is usually served as a desert during auspicious occasions. People in Tamil Nadu call it Boli. It resembles the Indian roti but has a filling inside which gives it its unique taste.

Let us see how to make Puran Poli.

Makes 4 Puran Polis

Ingredients

1 cup chana dal

1/3 cup sugar

½ tsp cardamom powder

A pinch of nutmeg powder or jaiphal

Few saffron strands or colour.

The Dough

1 cup whole wheat flour or gehun ka atta

½ tbsp ghee

Additional ingredients

Ghee

Whole wheat flour

Method

1. Boil the chana dal after soaking for two hours.

2. Now add the cooked dal with the sugar in a pan and cook on low flame till the sugar melts.

3. Stir continuously to make a paste.

4. Cool this paste and add nutmeg and cardamom powder along with the saffron colour.

5.  Now take the wheat flour and knead with ghee into soft dough.

6. Cover this for half an hour.

 

 

 

 

7. Now take a part of the dough and spread it a little.Roll the dough carefully

 

 

 

 

8. Now place a portion of the filling in the centre and make it into a small ball and roll it out again.Roll the dough carefully

9. Now put the rolled out polis on to the tawa and cook with ghee till done.

10. Your puran poli is ready! Celebrate Gudi Padwa with hot puran polis! Enjoy the Rangoli below which is a usual sight in Gudi Padwa.
